Ticket to Write – 72

Missed Opportunity

When I was cleaning out the rocketry section of the university library, in between Rocket Propulsion Elements and Ignition, there was this random cloth-bound book with no title on the cover. So I opened it up, and wouldjalookatthat, it’s a novel. In the rocketry section. So I go ‘this is a bit weird’, and did the obvious thing: I read it.
Thoroughly recommend The Right Stuff if you’re ever casting about for a book to read.
Here is a poem about how homeschooling affects kids.

I was going to write
something about how
the surface you lean on
(to write)
shows through. This was
I tried leaning on
a buckram-bound book
(The Right Stuff,
if you wondered)
& it ridged the ink.
I wanted
to draw a parallel
to textures
odd quirks
impressed on
first-draft people
& say
however much you edit
& polish
& do the classic
you never quite shake
that first draft.
But I only had one ticket
this morning
so I couldn’t write that poem.
